Quality, well ventilated helmet for a very fair price

This is a helmet boasting features of much higher priced helmets. It is very comfortable, at least if you have a round head(there are several head shapes) and very well ventilated. It is reasonably light for such a full-featured and affordable helmet, and so well balanced that it feels even lighter than it is, when wearing it.

This helmet, being white, increases your visibility dramatically. Studies show that a white or hi-viz helmet is the most important piece of high-viz gear one can wear. The white is also cooler in the heat of summer.

A huge plus for me is that it is longer in the chin area than most other helmets. This puts more space between your chin and the chin bar. For me, it means that my lips are not up against the chin bar.

It comes with a breath deflector, wind curtain, locking visor, and an inner sun-shade visor which is actuated by the slider on top. The sun visor is a boon, and I can't imagine going without it now.< br />
The one thing I wish HJC would do is put another position on the sun-visor that would allow it to come down 1/2 way, just under your line of sight.

A bonus of this helmet is that it has holes for intercoms under little insignias on the side, that are easily pried off. Also, the interior is easlily removable for installing an intercom, and there are two vent ports in the foam front liner that allow a microphone to be installes, totally out of the way, very easily. The one caveat on installing a mic in one of these ports is that you should tape over the port hole, and over the vent in front of the port as well, or you will get major wind noise...

I have actually tested one of these helmets in a crash, and it performed flawlessly. One thing to consider is that the visor has a lock on it. I usually do not use this lock, but in my crash, it locked by itself. This caused me a moment's panic when I tried to remove it, but I pulled very hard and it opened up in spite of the lock. As that helmet had been used in a crash, I bought a new HJC IS16 to replace the old one. If I had to replace my current helmet, it would be with another HJC IS16!

Best Helmet so far

This is the best helmet that I have owned so far after owning a variety of off road dirt bike helmets, and two previous versions of full face street bike helmets, including a high end Shoei. I have been wearing this helmet just about every day for the past two months on my daily commute. So far it is very comfortable, and I agree with the other reviewer that the chin bar is farther away from my lips and face than on most helmets. I get no wind buffeting (not that you would expect any on a full face but still) unless the wind is really blowing, and then I am getting pushed around more than just at the head. I opted for this model instead of the IS-MAX or CL-MAX, which are the next models up because I did not need an intercom system, and the Chatterbox Intercom that fits those models is $200, which is nearly the cost of the helmet.

The main selling feature for me was the integrated sun visor. Its an ingenious system where you slide your hand up the back of t he helmet to engage the visor down. When you want it to come up, its spring loaded and pops up with a push button on the top of the helmet. Both the lever to bring it down and the release button are very easy to use, even while riding with gloves on. The helmet is also well ventilated, and the included breath deflector helps to prevent fogging. If I breath out really hard and blow up into the helmet, I can fog the sun visor on a cold day, but it immediately clears on its own and does so quickly enough (about 1-2 seconds).

The only con in my opinion is that the vent closure on the chin seems cheaply made and I wonder how long it will last. To be fair, I have had the same concern on lots of other helmets as well so it did not lower my review score here.

I used the sizing chart on the HJC website, and it said I was a Large. Tried on a large in the dealer and it fit perfectly. That is the only reason I did not buy from here; I was concerned about get ting the wrong size and having to send it back. BUT, I did pay about $45 more for that "test" fit. I wish I would have saved the money and bought it here.

Bottom line: If you want an integrated sun visor, great comfort, and light weight, this is the helmet for you.

Like it more everyday!

Okay, I'm an old guy and never had a full face helmet before. Always had the three quarter skid lids and actually just bought one with the drop down face shield before I got this helmet. I got this because the guys at the bike places recommended full face because the bikes go fast and the crashes are harder at higher speeds. I did not get the "flip" full face because I was told they are weaker in a wreck.

Anyway, I had tried on this lid that was one size larger at the local parts department and it was "loose." I measured my head to make sure of the size and used the HJC size chart to order the helmet. They were correct, it fits like your head is stuck in a vise for the first few rides. Then it starts to fit like a glove and feel like it's part of your head.

It does have less side and downward front view than the open helmets but your head doesn't get snapped to the side when you look, like with cheaper or open helmets. I found the shield was easy to open and close and it has a lock. The other helmet I have with the big shield lets the big shield snap shut pretty quickly if you're riding "slowly" with it up.

The sunglass feature is a plus for me as I often ride just before sundown and I don't have to wrestle with sunglasses. If it's a sunny day and you're taking the helmet off someplace and walking around you're going to want to take a pair of sunglasses with you. Note: Don't let anyone know, but those $5 3M safety sunglasses at Home Depot are the best things since sliced bread and you don't have to worry if you lose or break them (they are very strong, by the way). I just put a pair in my pocket and go.

Since I live in Florida I'm not sure about the ventilation in any of these helmets, it's just plain hot! I didn't get a helmet with Bluetooth, a radio, or any other contrivance because I'm out to ride, not chat on the phone. If they can't find me, good, that's the point, right?

I must say that there are a multitude of helmets out there and I tried many on, and read up on many more. I checked out many of the local bike shops and tried on lots of helmets. Most of the stores seem to stock the same ones, although I have found one that has a ton of different makes and models. So it pays to look around and gives you a reason to go for a ride!

I did like the Shoei QWEST Passage TC-1, but I decided to get this one for $140 and not pop for a helmet that is $450! Although the Shoei did fit and feel great on the showroom floor. The HJC does have a slight pressure on my cheeks still, but I'm think that might be fine, as it's not uncomfortable. Your head may fit one helmet better than another, so go try some on.

I like the parts guy and would love to make the dealership some more bucks, but I saved almost $60 buying this helmet online. If money is no object, check out those $1,000 ones on the top shelf!

I have the matte black helmet and i t seems easy to clean the bugs off after a ride. I did use a hairdryer to get the stickers off, and some Turtle Wax Ice for a thin base coat of wax.

The d-rings are a little difficult to tighten sometimes, kinda hard to pull and in close quarters under your neck, but okay.

The helmet comes with a chin piece that keeps the cold out, and another piece that keeps the shield from fogging in cold weather. It was hot in the summer so I took those out. Might put the chin piece back in if it gets much colder (it was 70 for tonight's ride ... brrrr!).

I did see some remarks about the helmet being too loud and/or too quiet on some sites. Well, I have to admit that some engine noise was lost when I strapped this thing on. After putting some miles on it I actually like the quieter ride it gives, and the fact that it allows less wind into the helmet that the other helmet I have. I now shift more towards concentrating on bike vibration and the feel of the power curve, and it's just fine if not better than before. I did notice some noise inside the helmet when I first rode on a long trip, but, like anything else, once you get used to the "new" noise, it's fine, in my opinion anyway.

Bottom line is that this helmet allows you to feel secure and you can concentrate on riding and being safe, rather than hoping the wind isn't going to take your helmet and head off!!! Safe riding!
